Sikkim is a strategically located hill State covering an area of 7096 sq km (which accounts for 0.2% of the total area of India) Sikkim is one of the smallest States in India both in terms of population and area. The Kingdom of Sikkim was founded by the Namgyal dynasty in the 17th century. It was ruled by Buddhist priest-kings known as the Chogyal. The history of Sikkim, begins with contacts between ancient Hindus and Tibetans, followed by the establishment of a Buddhist kingdom or Chogyal in the 17th century. It became a princely state of the British Indian Empire in 1890. Following Indian independence, Sikkim continued its protectorate status with the Union of India after 1947 and the Republic of India after 1950. It joined India as the 22nd state in 1975. Sikkim is part of Rotary International District 3240 which covers the whole North East of India.
